Description
The Pelikan Souveran M1000 Maki-e Four Seasons Lucky Charm Fountain Pen is a Limited Edition writing instrument produced by Pelikan, a renowned German manufacturer of high-quality fountain pens. Celebrating the excellence of Japanese Maki-e and the renowned craftsmanship of Pelikan, the Four Seasons Lucky Charm embodies both artistic mastery and profound symbolism. Created by master artisan Ishikura Mitsuhiro of the Kaga H?shukai, this exceptional limited edition elevates the Souverän M1000 into a true object of meaning and contemplation. Equipped with a hand-crafted 18-carat gold nib and adorned with 24-carat gold-plated trims, it unites artistic expression with Pelikan’s highest level of writing performance. At the heart of its design lies a poetic concept inspired by a traditional deck of playing cards. The four suits are reinterpreted through the lens of Japanese sensibility, each embodying a season: clubs for spring, diamonds for summer, hearts for autumn, and spades for winter. Together, they reflect the natural cycle of the year and the passage of time. In a subtle reference, the 52 cards of a deck—totalling 364 when combined, and 365 with the addition of the joker—echo the days of a year, expressing the idea of an eternal, harmonious cycle. Each suit carries an auspicious meaning: diamonds symbolise wealth, hearts represent love, clubs embody happiness, while spades, traditionally the strongest suit, stand for courage and resilience. Through this layered symbolism, the pen transcends its decorative function, conveying wishes for a balanced and prosperous life. The decorative motifs further enrich this narrative. Cherry blossoms evoke the fleeting beauty of spring, flowing water reflects the vitality of summer, autumn leaves express transformation and maturity, while snow patterns embody the quiet strength of winter. Traditional patterns such as Sayagata and Asanoha are delicately integrated, symbolising continuity, growth, and enduring happiness. Rendered in a refined interplay of red and black, these elements create a harmonious and timeless aesthetic. Executed using the highly sophisticated Kaga Togidashi-Takamaki-e technique, the design combines raised and polished lacquer methods on a deep black urushi base. Layer upon layer, precious powders and lacquer are meticulously applied and hand-polished to reveal exceptional depth, luminosity, and precision—testimony to the mastery of a centuries-old craft.
Pelikan is a German manufacturing company known for its high-quality writing instruments, stationery, and art supplies. The company was founded in 1838 by Carl Hornemann in Hanover, Germany. Pelikan is well known for their regularly released Special & Limited edition fountain pens in addition to their standard line-up. There have been many Special & Limited edition releases over the years and I thought that it might be interesting to look back at what is considered to be the very first of these modern releases from Pelikan.
